Coronavirus Pandemic

Enduring A Crisis Can Produce Other Positives…

Are there any positives springing out of this Covid-19 global pandemic?

Although the situation may seem overwhelming, and even frightening, if you remain calm there are other factors to look at. Of course, that is that you “remain calm.”
Here are some of the factors I believe have been eye-openers for many of us:
  • Reminder that your hygiene may not have been what it should have been. All of us should have been washing our hands more frequently. My mother taught me many years ago that when you come back from the grocery store, upon entering the house, immediately wash your hands. I use to do this habitually. However, I too have slipped in frequency. Now it is a “must do” again.
  • Keep your home disinfected is critical. Another reminder that common areas of your home should be wiped down frequently. Now, wipe down daily. There are many other viruses lurking that disinfecting and keeping the home clean can be squelched. A clean home is just a healthier home.
  • This situation forces many people to take their own health a little bit more seriously. Eating correctly and getting enough rest may have been pushed aside for some when concentrating on their own problems or situations in life.
  • Exercising more. Even if you are in quarantine, if you have been exposed and do not have the virus, there are exercises you can do at home. Stretching and inside low-impact aerobics if you are not showing symptoms of being sick.
  • Connecting with your spirituality. For those of you who do believe in a Creator, this is also a time to do your meditation, pray, work on your readings. Although you do as much as you can to comply with the legal authorities, follow-up on home disinfecting, stay your social distance from people, you still need to rely on our Creator for guidance and strength.
A beautiful scripture that I recently read is Isaiah 30:15. Depending on your Bible translation, the phrase “your strength will be in keeping calm and showing trust.” Yes, trust in him and staying calm!
  • Connecting with your family members if you have to work from home or are in some type of quarantine. Obviously, if you are not sick and are home, you can start calling your friends and other family members to encourage them. Although there is social distancing, there are many other ways to be close to those you care about. Verbal communication does not need to stop. Also texting and emailing is another way to connect.
  • Learning to sacrifice. Yes, you can learn to sacrifice. Giving up perhaps your rights for the overall good of others is a form of sacrifice. In a selfish and self-centered society, this in my opinion, may be the greatest challenge. However, love of yourself and your neighbor, should ignite the spirit of sacrifice. Stop panicking and remember other people may need the toilet paper on the shelf too. Do not hoard.
  • Developing endurance. Endurance is a quality that allows you to go through many things life throws at you. Being part of the human race, you will face many things in your life requiring this quality. Things that you cannot change or do not have control over require endurance. Godly direction can supply you this quality. Also, looking at the end results and affect of not enduring or enduring should stimulate the right response.
Obviously, everyone has their own take on this global epidemic. Weeks ahead will uncover your own weaknesses and strengths. Hopefully, time will show that you do have the ability to sacrifice, endure, and show love for yourself and others.
